If you’ve been toying with the idea of starting your own animal welfare organization, there are a few considerations to keep in mind in order to get started on the right foot.

Good planning will allow you to advance in your project while learning along the way, ensuring that the process is a rewarding experience.

3 Steps to transform compassion into action

To begin, you will need to search for information and organize it so that you can use it to make sound decisions. A good way to do this, is to organize your project by answering basic questions that will help ensure the success of your venture.

Step 1 – Who

Despite it seeming like a simple task, the first step is self-awareness. Identifying your strengths will give you confidence in your ability to achieve your goal. Before you begin, it is important that you realize that you have the gift and ability to shape reality for the better. Turning your project into reality will not only improve the life of many animals, but will also help solve the problem of the stray animals in your city, consequently improving the life of your neighbors.

A Dog, A Miracle and An Animal Cruelty Law

With this approach, your idea takes on an entirely different dimension. What seemed like a simple idea, now has the power to shape a more pet-friendly world. That’s pretty great, isn’t it?

Step 2 – Why

Identifying the reasons that inspires you to invest your time and effort on your mission is vital to its success.

“We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals.” – Immanuel Kant

Being able to understand others’ feelings is called empathy and it is a key element of emotional intelligence. So, emotionally intelligent people are empaths.

Compassionate empathy is the most desirable form of empathy. Those who possess this type of intelligence are capable of taking action to solve a problem, and can combine logic and emotion when working towards a goal. Since you are an emotionally intelligent person, you can turn your compassion for animals into the idea of creating an organization to reduce animal suffering.

It gets even better! You can now define yourself as an empathetic, compassionate and emotionally intelligent person, capable of providing solutions to problems and able to positively change their environment. This sentence could be a good personal statement to build an impressive profile on your resume.

Therefore, your idea can now be turned into a project. You have already identified the problem and came up with a solution. If you can design a plan and execute a series of necessary steps to reach your objective and channel your desires into action, then you can add a new word to your personal statement, you can call yourself an entrepreneur.

Step 3 – When

We have already established that you possess what’s required to successfully start an organization: you love animals and you have found a solution to a problem that affects your community

So, what are you waiting for?

Although there is a lot to do and learn along the way, everything begins with a first step, even if a small one. Every large, powerful and successful organization was once a small endeavor. Since you already know how to help to improve the life of animals, the best thing that you can do for them is to begin NOW!

You may have noticed that we just talked about three elements required in every decision-making process: “who”, “why” and “when”. Together with “what” and “where”, they constitute the “Five W’s” concept. This method is generally used for information gathering and problem solving, and therefore can also be applied to project management. Before embarking on a new initiative, answering these five questions, and even adding a sixth one, “how”, can be a powerful tool to ensure that the project is completed successfully.
